Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is related to a wide range of applications, among which SAR ship detection has attracted much research attention. SAR ship detection aims to detect ships nearshore or offshore by processing SAR images. According to whether the detected bounding boxes are horizontal or oriented, SAR ship detection can be divided into two categories: horizontal bounding box (HBB) SAR ship detection and oriented bounding box (OBB) SAR ship detection. This paper provides an overview of SAR ship detection, including the research progress of HBB SAR ship detection methods, OBB SAR ship detection methods, and the datasets and benchmarks. We further discuss the existing problems and challenges and provide insights into the future development trends in SAR ship detection.
