Bioremediation of Antibiotics and Their Metabolites from Waste Water

TheBioremediation last century’s discovery of AntibioticsAntibiotics (AB) became the game changer and has turned into a big revolution in Medical and human therapeutics. Additionally, AB has several other biotechnology applications, specifically recombinant DNA technology, agriculture, animal husbandry, etc. AB are the most reliable drugs for preventing bacterial infections worldwide and are released either partially degraded in the form of some metabolites or undegraded into the environment leading to antibiotic pollution, and its remediation has been a great challenge in the present scenario. There are various antibiotic sources like laboratories, hospitals, dairy industry, and agriculture croplands generating Ab pollution and their contamination in wastewater has severe environmental repercussions. Easy availability, increased prescription and consumption rates led to an upsurge in AB concentration in the wastewater and environment. Most of the conventional wastewater treatment methods have been found ineffective for antibiotic removal and have posed serious environmental risks of AB and associated antibiotic-resistant genes (ARGs) in the microorganism channelizing the development of multiple drug-resistant microorganisms. Thus, it’s important to understand the strategies for antibiotic resistance development by bacteria and also the techniques to identify AB and AGR. WHO (World Health Organization) and National policies have been implemented to prevent antibiotic resistance development in the environment, where bioremediation techniques like phytoremediationPhytoremediation, bacterial remediation, and other living entities can play immense roles in antibiotic removal. Therefore, the present work aims to address various sources of AB, possible decomposition mechanisms, their adverse outcomes, antibiotic resistance mechanisms, bioremediation strategies, and future challenges in mitigating AB from the environment.
