Astroturfing: Understanding and Addressing the Influence of Fake Grassroots Movements Across Diverse Domains on Social Media Platforms
摘要
Astroturfing is a deceptive practice used to disguise or create the illusion of fake support or opposition to a certain cause, product, or campaign by the people on the ground when, in fact, it is not. While social platforms serve as key communication and information broadcasting mechanisms, they are becoming more superficial; this fraudulent practice is effectively carried out on social media platforms using fake accounts, bots, or individuals who are paid to enhance or suppress online campaigns or content artificially. Astroturfing, a form of political manipulation and marketing, distorts public opinion by using social media algorithms to spread false claims and silence genuine voices, opinions, or sentiments of the public. From political campaigns to search engines, astroturfing declines the authenticity of online discourse and decision-making processes by misrepresenting assumptions, manipulating public opinion, and undermining the credibility of information shared online at risk. Uncovering astroturfing can maintain trust in online interactions, shield consumers from false information, and support fairness and democracy, promoting transparency, authenticity, and trust in online discussions and decision-making. This paper highlights the impact of astroturfing across domains and the need for robust identification mechanisms for astroturfing detection that can identify coordinated patterns to effectively combat fraudulent online practices in various domains and expose astroturfing efforts.
