Sustainability by Design: “Omics” Applications for Environmentally Friendly Tomato Production
摘要
Tomato is a major crop worldwide and are in tremendous demand for processed and fresh foods. Current tomato production practices are not sustainable and eco-friendly; therefore, there is a need to adopt new agricultural practices for tomato production, which improves soil fertility, uses resources sustainably, maintains biodiversity, and is eco-friendly as well, while ensuring food security and a healthy nutrition for all. This chapter elaborates various omics-based approaches that have revolutionized crop improvement and sustainable agricultural practices. The advances in omics approaches for crop improvement have made a considerable contribution to the sustainability of agriculture, and developing climate-smart cultivars is regarded as the most sustainable strategy for enhancing food production. Furthermore, to discover changes, several techniques and tools such as metabolomics, genomics, ionomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics are developed for sustainable and eco-friendly tomato production.
