Enhancing Abiotic Stress Tolerance in Tomato: CRISPR-Based Interventions
摘要
The discovery of CRISPR-Cas9 has revolutionized the area of genome editing as a valuable technology by virtue of its extraordinary accuracy and effectiveness in altering genetic material. The use of CRISPR-Cas9 and other cutting-edge genome editing methods to impart desired traits in tomato has been covered in detail in this chapter. Here we review the basic workings of CRISPR-Cas9, its benefits over conventional breeding techniques, and how it can accelerate the development of tomato varieties with higher yields, greater resistance to abiotic stresses, and more nutritional content. Beyond CRISPR-Cas9, we also go over the most recent progress in genome editing technologies like prime editing and base editing that provide even extra accuracy and adaptability. We provide successful cases of tomato trait augmentation, addressing both the technical difficulties and regulatory issues, using comprehensive case studies and experimental data. The present chapter offers a thorough exposition of the present situation and potential developments around genome editing in tomatoes, emphasizing the revolutionary influence it has on agricultural biotechnology and food security.
