Near Field Communication (NFC) is gaining increasing attention as a highly convenient, short-range, contactless communication method. It has garnered interest primarily due to its user-friendly support for mobile payment, and it has been widely used in various mobile devices for some time now. The popularity of NFC is on the rise, thanks to the rapid proliferation of NFC-enabled devices in the market. This technology facilitates data transfer between devices when brought into proximity. It is primarily designed for seamless integration with mobile phones, enabling them to communicate with other phones through peer-to-peer connections and read or write information on NFC tags and cards using a compatible reader. Apple Pay, Google’s Wallet, Samsung Pay, and Cash App have successfully integrated NFC technology for mobile transactions. However, as with any wireless technology that experiences widespread adoption, NFC is not immune to security concerns. It can be vulnerable to several security-related attacks, such as a man-in-the-middle, denial of service (DOS), and relay attacks. This paper explores the vulnerabilities associated with NFC and the different attacks to which NFC is susceptible.
