Manufactured Sand as Replacement to Fine Aggregates in Concrete

This paper is aimed to investigate the effect of replacing natural sand with manufactured-sand (M-sand) on the homogeneity and mechanical properties of concrete. M-sand with percentage of 0, 20, 40, 60, and 100% was used to replace natural sand in concrete with the design grade of C30. Microstructure analysis, workability test, ultrasonic pulse velocity test, compression test and splitting tensile test were carried out in this study. M-sand appeared to have more angular and rougher surface compared with natural sand, which enhanced the bonding within the interfacial transition zone. The replacement of natural sand with M-sand did not affect the homogeneity of the concrete but showed excellent concrete quality due to denser concrete mix. The workability of the fresh concrete mix varied depending on the different percentage of M-sand replacement. As the percentage of M-sand replacement increased, both compressive strength and splitting tensile strength were enhanced. It can be concluded that natural sand can be 100% replaced by M-sand in normal strength concrete to enhance its mechanical properties.
