Instrumented Test Piles—A Case Study in Johor Bahru Old Alluvium

The subsoil of Johor Bahru consists mainly Old Alluvium formation which con-sist of silty sand which can be defined as weathered residual soils. This formation loose to medium dense at the upper layer because of surface erosion High strength and over consolidation the lower layers. Some of the complications are outstanding elevation changes of the Old Alluvial terrains that comprise features of wave like patterns. This research is based on 13 instrumented bored pile tests performed at 5 different locations in the same project region in Johor Bahru. The findings of these tests are presented in the research regarding the last shaft friction coefficients and reveal the most frequently applied average relationship be-tween ultimate shaft friction coefficients and SPT N-values widely utilized in Malaysia. Static load tests complete with vibrating wire strain gauges and extensometers offered finer information than ordinary pile head load–displacement da-ta; these included shaft friction through the various sub- soil or rock layers, the end bearing part, toe movement, and pile’s elastic compression. These measurements aid in identifying the shaft friction and the end bearing resistance with dis-placement of piles (load transfer behavior) to enhance the pile lengths and deter-mining the pile be-haviour for various diameters and lengths. This kind of optimization can result in vast savings on the expenses of establishing foundations especially in projects with similar geophysical characteristics.
