This concluding chapter summarizes the positive and negative themes found in the personal narratives of elderly writers from the Qing period. It also outlines future research directions by addressing three aspects. First, it questions the applicability of the gendered double standard for aging, as suggested by previous scholars, in the study of self-narratives on aging. By summarizing the historical evidence in Qing personal writings, the differences and similarities between men’s and women’s attitudes toward aging may foster further reflection. Second, while acknowledging age as a category of historical analysis, the chapter emphasizes the importance of intersecting age with other lenses such as gender, class, and race in historical studies. It calls for increased scholarly attention to the study of the history of elders, inspired by the advancements in the field of childhood history, which also utilizes age as an analytical category. Finally, the chapter positions this book as an early contribution to the establishment of Chinese Historical Gerontology as a new subfield, aiming to enrich both historical studies and gerontological research.
