Strategy for Using Moodle and R in Managing and Systematizing the Teaching Evaluation Surveys in the Engineering School

The Engineering School at the Universidad de la República employs a survey to collect feedback on various aspects of course development and instructor performance. The survey was initially conducted on paper and digitized with scanned responses. The Engineering School offers approximately 200 courses each semester. Challenges associated with the traditional paper-based system included excessive paper consumption, managing numerous forms and associated costs, and rectifying form errors. A recent development, since 2020, involves using Moodle and R software for systematic organization and automated processing of survey responses. This article aims to present the managing and systematic strategy consisting of four sequential stages that integrate the survey deployment via Moodle with the automated processes facilitated by R code. The reports generated from students’ responses provide constructive feedback to teachers; they are used in various institutional contexts, including academic accreditation processes. This initiative offers the advantage of leveraging two open-source software solutions to efficiently manage large data volumes, rectify errors, and achieve costs of saving. We posit that this strategy could benefit other faculties needing cost-effective methods for conducting student opinion surveys.
