Microbial biosurfactants are the substitutes for traditional chemical-enhanced oil recovery (EOR). Microbial surfactants, often known as biosurfactants, are amphiphilic, surface-active chemicals produced by microorganisms such as yeast, bacteria, and unicellular fungi. Biosurfactants exhibit eco-friendly qualities as they have total biodegradability, low eco-toxicity, and generation from bio-renewable sources. Furthermore, biosurfactants can achieve better surface qualities in several ways, such as by reducing interfacial and surface tension, enhancing mobility through increased emulsification capacity, lowering critical micelle concentration (CMC), and altering wettability (contact angle). Other EOR approaches’ limitations are being removed with microbial EOR. It is discovered that the microorganisms are not producing enough biosurfactants to be used in the reservoir field, which ultimately causes the entire process to become expansive. Waste as an alternative is considered a valuable contribution to producing beneficial compounds for sustainable waste management. One of the most environmentally friendly and sustainable choices available is the production of biosurfactants from trash. When the trash is used to produce biosurfactants, the associated benefits include reduced processing costs, increased feedstock availability, and an environmentally favorable product. This study aims to explore agro-industrial waste as a substrate for the production and enhancement of biosurfactants in the application of microbial EOR. By employing a range of raw materials, biosurfactant production reduces the expense of treating waste and presents an opportunity for profit from the biosurfactant's sale.
