Ancient texts such as Kamasutra have identified it as a spice that increases libido and improves sexual function. Traditional medical systems such as Ayurveda, Unani, Iranian, and Traditional Chinese Medicine have acknowledged its medicinal use in treating sexual disorders. Its aphrodisiac effect isn’t fully proven, though. This chapter starts with a discussion of saffron’s chemistry, emphasizing its bioactive components. Moreover, it highlights the empirical data and research outcomes regarding the impact of saffron on sexual function. In these studies, self-assessment questionnaires are used in clinical trials. Furthermore, the chapter delves on the folklore surrounding saffron’s use in literature, art, medicine, and cuisine. While some research found no discernible effect of saffron on sexual function, the majority of studies confirm saffron’s aphrodisiac properties. These results are indisputable; nonetheless, more studies on animals, comprehension of the saffron’s mode of action, and advanced techniques for data generation are required to prove its aphrodisiac properties.
