MXene and Its Composites for Industrial Applications

MXene, after its discovery in 2011 by Yury Gogotsi and Michel Barsoum, are now center of attraction for research due to their potential applications in various industrial sectors. These are the inorganic materials of molecular formula Mn+1Xn, which consist of atomically thin layers of transition metal (M)-carbides or nitrides or carbonitrides (X). MXene without surface modification are magnetic and metallic, making them suitable for sensor and energy storage applications. These photothermal materials are promising because they absorb a lot of visible light, have corrosion inhibitors, and are antimicrobial. MXene can be used in a variety of industrial applications, including energy storage devices such as Li-ion batteries, energy storage components, supercapacitors, transparent conducting electrodes, gas sensors, neural electrodes, photonic diodes, electrochromic devices, and triboelectric nanogenerators, as well as composites, photocatalysts for dye degradation, and water purification. To capture the present trend of MXene and MXene-based composites, this chapter will critically analyze their prospective industrial applications.
