The superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) is a layer of the face beneath the subcutaneous fat. The SMAS is represented in the scalp by the galea aponeurotica, which then splits to ensheathe the frontalis, occipitalis, procerus, and some of the periauricular muscles.
