As a prelude to the balance of this book, this introductory chapter sets the foundation for an exploration of self-care practices within the counselling profession through autoethnographic reflections. As practitioners in counselling and helping professions, the authors share personal experiences that emphasise the importance of planning, practising, and maintaining self-care, a concept that is often neglected in favour of clinical priorities. The authors discuss how self-care is foundational to sustaining long-term effectiveness, avoiding empathy fatigue and burnout, a challenge exacerbated by recent global events like the COVID-19 pandemic and social movements such as Black Lives Matter and the Me-Too Movement. By adopting a strengths-based framework, the authors highlight the evolution of professional and personal well-being throughout a counsellor's career, aiming to bridge the gap between the theory of self-care and its practical application. Through these narratives, counsellors across the professional lifespan advocate for both personal responsibility in self-care practices and systemic support to foster a sustainable work-life balance for counsellors across different stages of their careers.

摘要
