Transnational Identity in the Shared Online Emotions of Environmental Activism

This article aims to delve deeper into the transnational identity shared in online emotions, which is embodied in the tweets in a youth-led environmental movement’s organisation. Through case studies from the Twitter account of the Indonesian civic environmentalism Backsilmove, a Greenpeace’s affiliated organisation based in Indonesia, this study explores the circulation of globalised transnational identity of activism, reflecting the meaning of grievance and contentions demonstrated in selected tweets from the Twitter handle of the organisation. This original study formulates, the environmental movement campaigns heralded by Backsilmove has resonated Greenpeace’s transnational repertoire, which was presented in the effectiveness of its cyber-power by using Twitter to publicise its radical act of rescuing the urban forest and the capabilities of the activists to express their dissent as government plans to commercialise the forest unravelled.
