Barriers in the Implementation of Blockchain Technology in Indian Food Supply Chains: A Study Through ISM and MICMAC Analysis

The world’s population expansion is outpacing food consumption, posing unprecedented difficulties to the global food supply chain. The pressure on food supply chain stakeholders has increased because of the need to meet this demand while assuring food quality, eliminating waste, reducing carbon footprint, and avoiding deforestation. Blockchain technology has emerged as a possible option to answer these difficulties, and fast computer facilities and vast data availability enable it. It has received substantial interest as a potential means of developing a safe and secure food supply chain. This chapter aims to understand and investigate blockchain technology in the Indian food industry. Since blockchain technology has been recognised as a solution for several supply chain problems, the chapter study intends to learn more about how it is used in practice and the challenges associated with its integration. The chapter is divided into two stages. The first part is a rigorous literature review that attempts to provide a comprehensive grasp of the issues and concerns raised in the existing corpus of literature. The Interpretive Structural Modelling approach is used in the second phase to build mutual links among the identified barriers. Using this method, the study outlined in the chapter aims to list the most and least dominating obstacles. The study results outlined in the chapter have practical consequences for the food industry, legislators, and researchers. The Food Supply Chain’s efficiency, transparency, and security can be enhanced by blockchain technology.
