The journey of science and technology began with the Industrial Revolution, marked as Industrial Revolution-1 and has progressed to the current era, known as Industrial Revolution-4 (I4.0). This fourth revolution is characterised by the widespread use of computerisation, digitisation, and digital tools, all centred around internet-based technology. This technological transformation is reshaping various aspects of society globally. In line with the global trend, India is also undergoing significant digitisation across different spheres of life. In particular, there is a growing emphasis on leveraging computerisation and internet-based technologies to enhance various sectors, including supply chain management. The focus of this paper is to provide an overview of how computerisation and internet-based technology applications are impacting supply chain management, with a specific focus on the rural population in India. The Government of India (GOI) has recognised the importance of extending the benefits of computerisation to rural areas and has initiated various schemes to address this need. Initiatives such as the National Logistics Policy, Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), and Digital Village are aimed at creating a conducive environment for the adoption of digital technologies not only in urban pockets but also in rural areas. These steps taken by the GOI signal a promising future for supply chain applications, particularly in rural areas. The chapter explores different facets of this topic, focusing on understanding the implications of computerisation and internet-based technologies for supply chain management in India.
