We explored extracting users’ “true” latent and implicit perceptions of robots by means of a thought experiment, the “Ship of Theseus.” Participants were asked to read stories about the Ship of Theseus that featured different target objects (e.g., human, ship, or robot) and to answer “identical” or “not identical” to the question of “whether an object is identical to before after all of its elements have been replaced with new ones?” We then conducted a correspondence analysis on their descriptions of why they chose their answer. The results suggest that the participants had ambiguous perceptions of robots like “robots are neither artificial objects nor living objects.” Moreover, these also suggest that the participants evoked uncomfortableness from the word “robot” and then often used the word “robot” to describe potentially creepy and obscure objects.
