The General Classifier Gè in Chinese: Evidence from Mutual Information Computation

The classifier Gè (个) and Zhī (只) represent the two most commonly used classifiers in contemporary Mandarin Chinese. Notably, Gè (个) is widely acknowledged as a universal classifier, whereas Zhī (只) functions as a standard classifier. This study employs an information-theoretic approach to quantitatively analyze the linguistic status of the Mandarin Chinese general classifier Gè (个) and classifier Zhī (只). By examining a corpus of 1000 numeral-classifier-noun structures, this paper utilizes Mutual Information theory to reveal the intricate correlations between these two classifiers and the inherent semantic attributes of the nouns they collocate with. The findings demonstrate that Gè (个) exhibits a broad range and adaptability in pairing with the internal semantic features of nouns (atomicity and homogeneity), thereby statistically confirming its characteristics as a general classifier. In contrast, Zhī (只) tends to collocate with nouns that convey strong individuality in Mandarin. The study deepens the understanding of the definition and features of general classifiers and provides predictive insights into their potential evolutionary paths in Chinese. These discoveries offer fresh perspectives and guidance for the study of Chinese classifiers.
