Causative predicates are an important predicate category of human languages. Previous studies of causative predicates mainly focused on the semantic structures, semantic components, and semantic relationships, etc., while few of them focused on the semantic interpretation. Based on the semantic classification of references [3], this paper examines the meanings and usages of direct, indirect, and affective causative predicates in Chinese one by one. As a result, we find that different semantic classifications of causative predicates often lead to different interpretive modes. The direct causation is typically interpreted by the “使(shi make)” mode, the indirect causation is interpreted with the “把(ba handle)” mode, and the affective causation is interpreted through the “对(dui cause)” mode. Similar differences also exist within the same classification of predicates.

摘要
