In this paper, the multifunctional morpheme of Chinese word “Sui(随)” is comprehensively researched, and then the diachronic semantic evolution and synchronic distribution are combined to explore the historical hierarchy of the semantic evolution of “Sui(随)” by utilizing the semantic map method. It is pointed out that “Sui(随)” in some dialects is semantically discontinuous. But from a diachronic perspective, these semantic related functions can be discovered, which is the advantage of diachronic semantic map. Word meanings are not isolated and scattered, and the intrinsic meanings are systematic. The semantic evolution of “Sui(随)” has its own characteristics, but also has family characteristics of words with the conceptual field of “follow”. Additionally, the semantic map method effectively demonstrates the semantic relationships and lexical co-lexicalization.
