This chapter provides a brief history of various engineering rock mass classification methods that have been developed. Several comprehensive and influential classification systems are introduced, including the Rock Mass Rating (RMR), Mining Rock Mass Rating (MRMR), Q-system, Geological Strength Index (GSI), Index of Rock Mass Basic Quality (BQ), Slope Mass Rating (SMR), and Chinese System for SMR (CSMR) methods. The correlations between these various indexes and the evolution and emerging trends in rock mass classification are also presented.
