This chapter delves into the shifting gender dynamics within family life among young married Jordanian couples who have relocated to Dubai, UAE. Through close observation of family interactions, it sheds light on how these young Arabs are actively redefining gender roles, identities, marital expectations, and models of parenthood as their understandings of dominant gender norms undergo significant transformation. The findings uncover couples’ enactment of more egalitarian gender relations within marriages and the embodiment of alternatives to normative models of femininity and masculinity. The study posits that Dubai serves as a heterotopia for the Arab youth—a space where the gendered status quo can be subverted and new realities can be forged that transcend conventional societal constraints. These insights open new avenues for exploring the UAE's role in meeting the evolving aspirations of Arab youth, offering a forward-looking perspective on their future within the Middle East region.

摘要
