This chapter examines three written genres in fabrication shops: invoices, near-miss reports, and nonconforming-part tags. Such genres are complex. For example, invoices manifest multiple contingencies, such as the price of steel at the time of purchase and the time of sale, the price of competing, cheaply manufactured alternatives, and the efficiency of the employees. The chapter ends by considering how writing instructors might use these genres and other writing common to skilled trades in the writing courses skilled-trades students take as a part of their degree programs and how skilled-trade instructors might employ them to facilitate trade students’ building of conceptual and procedural knowledge.
