Precision Farming for Food Security and Agricultural Land Restoration
摘要
Precision farming utilizes precise input application to increase crop yields over traditional methods, focusing on the 5Rs: right time, right amount, right place, right source, and right manner. It aims to manage spatial and temporal variability to enhance productivity while minimizing negative effects. Technologies such as Global Positioning Systems (GPS); Geographic Information Systems (GIS); Remote Sensing; Internet of Things (IoT); Drones and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs); Data Analytics (DA) and Machine Learning (ML) are crucial for precision farming, enabling precise nutrient, water, weed, and pest management. Precision farming techniques, including laser land leveling, and precise nutrient, water, weed, and pest management, have the potential to significantly impact agricultural production and food security. Land degradation is a serious concern that affects the soil health and productivity. The agricultural lands experience 40% moderate degradation and 9% severe degradation adversely impacting global food production by 13%. Precision farming also addresses land degradation through agronomic measures like conservation tillage and cover cropping, mulching, organic matter, contour farming, etc. Despite its benefits, challenges like data management, security, and connectivity remains. Future innovations integrating AI, IoT, and UAVs hold promise for advancing agricultural practices and sustainability. The progress in technology and the utilization of big data are enhancing the connectivity, precision, efficiency, and broad applicability of precision farming tools. Improvements in technological infrastructure and regulatory frameworks can enhance access to precision farming, hence magnifying its socioeconomic advantages.
