Ecosystem Restoration for Achieving the Land Degradation Neutrality

The degradation of our planet’s forests, rangelands, and agricultural lands poses an enormous risk to sustainable development, biodiversity conservation and our capacity to mitigate and adapt over climate change. This degradation undermines the actual foundations of human well-being, including water security, food and livelihoods, and exacerbates issues such as conflict, poverty and displacement. The basic causes for degrading land are multifaceted, including overharvesting of natural resources, overexploitation for agriculture and the broader forces of economic development and populace increase. In retort to this global challenge, the idea of LDN (Land Degradation Neutrality) become familiarized at the Rio + 20 Earth Summit and later enshrined within the UNSDGs (Target 15.3). LDN objects to break or reverse land degradation, ensuring that land, now and in the future, is managed sustainably. It is not an additional burden but an opportunity to integrate conservation and development in a way that enhances the value of conservation efforts. Further, ecosystem restoration is the method of returning degraded environments to a more natural state, is emerging as a key strategy for achieving LDN. It offers a powerful tool for mitigating and adapting the climate change impacts and ecological disasters. By focusing upon restoration, conservation and sustainable management, we can create more resilient ecosystems that support biodiversity and human needs. To realize the full potential of LDN, we must adopt integrated ecosystem management approaches that ensure sustainability at all levels and avoid unintentional consequences. The conservation sector is already equipped with a range of tools and practices to deliver LDN, and these must be applied in a gender-responsive manner to ensure inclusivity and effectiveness. As the world embarks on an era of ecological restoration, with Governments committing to ambitious restoration projects, it is authoritative that we understand the significance of LDN within a broader sustainable development and conservation agendas.
