This introductory chapter to Narrative Universes of Disability: Global Perspectives explores the multifaceted dimensions of disability through a range of perspectives, examining how disability is narrated, represented, and negotiated across different contexts. The chapter is organised around three major discursive frameworks: “Ethnographic Accounts of Disability,” “Negotiating Disability Identity in Literature,” and “Narratives of Inclusion in Education and Design”. The first section presents firsthand narratives and observations that illuminate the everyday realities of living with a disability. These accounts highlight the social, cultural, and institutional challenges faced by individuals with disabilities, and the diverse strategies they employ to navigate these challenges. The second section analyses how literary texts construct and subvert disability identities, examining the power of narrative to either reinforce stereotypes or challenge dominant discourses. Critiques of the representational mis/treatment of characters with disabilities lead to questions about the ethics, politics, and aesthetics of such representations. The final section addresses the critical intersections of disability with education and design, two fields that play a pivotal role in shaping inclusive environments. It highlights the necessity of integrating sociocultural considerations, fostering participatory approaches, and promoting inclusive research practices to create more equitable and accessible environments for disabled individuals. The chapter discusses how the diverse perspectives presented in this book challenge conventional notions of disability, urging readers to reconsider their preconceived notions and embrace a more inclusive and empathetic worldview.
