This volume rests on the view that moving beyond mere comparison means expertly integrating various concepts, patterns of thinking, and (to whatever extent it is possible) entire traditions is an important philosophical endeavor. Ronnie Littlejohn defends that comparative philosophy is in some ways distinct from philosophical approaches that are based in a single cultural tradition. There are distinct kinds of approaches to philosophy, and comparative philosophy appreciates these methodological differences. Having well understood Western and Chinese thought, Rosemont was someone who moved beyond comparative philosophy. Littlejohn writes, “He was creating a new and enriched philosophical view that was not reducible to either the Chinese or Western philosophical tradition.” Rosemont was “the kind of a philosopher that makes the texts he compares live again, often in new vocabularies.” Littlejohn’s chapter well explains not only the work of Henry Rosemont, but the spirit of this volume as well.
