Hybridity and inclusivity are necessary for comparisons, and even more important for going beyond them. Li-Hsiang Lisa Rosenlee praises Roger Ames for taking gender issues seriously in studying Confucianism. If feminism is going to continue to develop, then the productive possibilities of diverse connections must be explored. Rosenlee’s own vision sees a “progressive and inclusive future for humanity that is feminist and Confucian at the same time.” Her essay, which is deeply inspired by Ames’s approach, formulates specific calls to arms about pressing contemporary issues, ranging from American politics to the marginalization of women and feminist topics in philosophy to racism and prejudice in Kant’s writings. For Rosenlee, tackling such issues shows the potentials of a philosophy that goes beyond comparisons. If, as Socrates suggests, philosophy is a true “pursuit of wisdom” then it must apply this wisdom in critiquing our times. Rosenlee concludes, “As a Confucian feminist, I choose hybridity and inclusivity as the way forward in this globalized world.”
