Sesuvium portulacastrum is a facultative halophyte that survives under various abiotic stresses including salinity, drought, temperature, and heavy metal stress. S. portulacastrum is generally found in the subtropical, coastal, and warmer climates and shows great physiological and biochemical plasticity that allows it to survive under various environmental stresses. S. portulacastrum shows high physiological plasticity by exhibiting adaptation through adjustments in anatomy, morphology, growth pattern, water use efficiency, and alteration in succulence under different environmental stresses. At biochemical level, differential accumulation of osmolytes, antioxidants, and phytohormones has been reported in S. portulacastrum under these conditions. In this chapter, we provide a comprehensive overview of the various environmental stress tolerance strategies of S. portulacastrum. This multi-stress tolerance ability of S. portulacastrum highlights its potential in development of biosaline agriculture in saline and marginal lands.

摘要
