The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is the result of efforts by the European Parliament and other governmental entities to strengthen data security for EU citizens and to provide more uniformity in the data laws that are already in place. EU consumers have more control over who can access and use one’s individual data from those inside and outside of the EU territory. Meanwhile, the most recent regulations will increase uniformity in data security across EU members, making it more difficult for non-EU nations to abide by them. Once again, GDPR is legislation that protects the security and privacy of EU residents, not a recommendation. This paper addresses the GDPR’s obstacles for India and suggests an organizational-wide approach. We evaluate the challenges that the Indian organizations face while adapting GDPR in Indian context. We later suggest an implementation framework for GDPR implementation considering these challenges. The framework will be beneficial for Indian organizations to prepare themselves for compliance.
