Revisiting the Energy-Efficient Modified Solar Still

Access to clean water remains a critical issue in remote and arid regions, where traditional water sources are scarce. Solar distillation presents a promising, renewable solution to this challenge, offering a sustainable alternative to energy-intensive desalination plants that increase greenhouse gas emissions. The purpose of this review article is to highlight the evolution and advances in solar still technology, with a particular emphasis on design alterations that aim to improve efficiency. By examining parameters such as water level, solar radiation, reflectors, cooling systems, and sun-tracking mechanisms, this study synthesizes insights from past research to guide future solar still enhancements. The methodology involved a systematic analysis of experimental studies and design variants, resulting in recommendations for maximizing water output and operational efficiency. Key findings underscore the impact of sun-tracking integration, advanced absorbent materials, and multi-effect distillation on overall productivity, providing a comprehensive reference for researchers and practitioners in sustainable water treatment technologies.
