The fourth chapter chronicles the history of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Tasmania. It recounts some of the twists and turns and the role of personalities and ambitions in evolving from a “Faculty of Engineering” to a combined “Department of Engineering and ICT” and the “divorce” when ICT (information and communications technology) emerged as a separate department. It is a personal account from the author of this book who was the head of the Department of Engineering in Tasmania’s second city, Launceston, between 1996 and 2000. The “1980 rule” saw a shift from 2- to 3-year engineering certificate and diploma in the TAFE sector to Bachelor of Engineering degrees awarded by the newly formed Tasmania College of Advanced Education.
