Flow Modeling of Jojari River in Semi-Arid Western Rajasthan, India Using the Geospatial Techniques and 1D Flow Model Analysis

The paper illuminates the dynamics and flow character of Jojari (Jojri) river and its point sources during 2015–2020. The study area includes Jojari river flowing through a 72 km stretch within the Jodhpur district, Rajasthan, India. The precipitation data during the said time period is used to simulate the hydrology of the river stretch. The Cartosat DEM and Landsat imageries for same time period were processed for the said river and point sources in geographic information system platform. The data obtained is utilised to perform a 1-D model of the fluvial process within the river. This paper reports a coupling of MIKE-SHE and MIKE 11 taken one after the other while modeling flow. The coupling is used to investigate water balance in the river during this process. The variation in the area of a wetland associated with the Jojari river is captured using Modified Normalized Difference Water Index (MNDWI). With precipitation just below 150 mm during the rainy season, Jojari water was found to pond at different locations and was naturally flooding the neighbouring areas or diverted for irrigation by farmers. The areas prone to inundation events were delineated for the 72 km stretch of Jojari river. A disparity in chainage between location of maximum discharge and water level respectively is observed in the Jojari river. The coupled modeling results are similar to experimental and visual results observed in the field. The implication of the study is the identification of similar fluvial processes in arid streams across western Rajasthan, India.
