Assessment of Future Water Supply and Demand in a River Basin Using Water Evaluation and Planning System (WEAP): A Case Study in South Africa

The Caledon River basin covers part of Southeast of Free State Province of South Africa and North of the Kingdom of Lesotho. The objective of this study was to apply the Water Evaluation and Planning model (WEAP21) to assess the water supply and demand in the Caledon River basin under three scenarios, namely Scenario 1: increase in population growth rates; Scenario 2: development of irrigation systems in Lesotho; and Scenario 3: implementation of environmental flow requirement (EFR) on the Caledon River. The modelling results showed that the scenario of high population growth rate leads to a decrease in water availability to all water use sectors in the basin. The years 2025 and 2050 were selected to evaluate the water balance of the river basin under two water use scenarios (high population growth rate and increased irrigation activities). The result showed that the river flows are expected to meet the projected demand in 2025 but will face shortage to meet the required demands in 2050.
