Urbanisation in less developed countries including India is characterised by metropolitisation. Out of 52 million plus cities as per the 2011 census, 8 of them could be defined as megacities with a population of 5 million and more. As these cities dominate the urban and economic space, this chapter focuses on the population growth and characteristics of these cities. It is also a known fact that the metropolitisation of India’s urban space is accompanied by urban sprawl and peri-urbanisation of the adjoining areas around the megacities. A core-periphery framework is used in this chapter to study the pattern of migration. It may be recalled that during the COVID-19 times, these megacities impelled a large number of migrant workers revealing urban inequality and urban exclusion as a characteristic feature of India’s urbanisation.

摘要
