This chapter tackles a piece of reflective writing about growing up in Davao and the colonisation of Mindanao. It takes the tools developed in Chapters 2–5 and applies them to the analysis of a single text. The point of this chapter is to show how ideational, interpersonal and textual meaning work to together to achieve the social purpose of a text and the shift of gears it might move through to accomplish its goals. This chapter models how all the analytic tools presented in the previous chapter can be deployed to manage both a critical discourse analysis (CDA) and a positive discourse analysis (PDA) of a text. It shows the steps that can be followed for doing discourse analysis, as well as modelling how a researcher can argue from the analysis to make a point about a text. Finally, this chapter briefly discusses the need for both critique (CDA) and hope (PDA) in relation to advocacy discourse promoting social change.
