This chapter takes Chapter 4’s work on textual meaning a step further, exploring the overall structure of a student newspaper text. This text is a comment piece critiquing the online learning modules produced by the Philippines Department of Education in response to the COVID-19 crisis. In particular, it examines the textual resources that go into the construction of a highly abstract, academic text. Apart from discussing how the same resources discussed in the previous chapter are manipulated to produce higher level texts, this chapter discusses nominalisations and how packaging meaning as abstractions is essential to argumentation. In doing so, it shows how intellectualised Filipino tends to reason inside rather than between clauses—in order to parcel up information into the right packages of cause and effect and manage which bundles of information are arguable and which are not. The analysis offered in this chapter presents a toolkit of how an analysis of Filipino academic discourse can be undertaken.
