This chapter is concerned with textual meaning. Using the same three texts discussed in previous chapters, it begins with consideration of the way Filipino introduces people and things in discourse and keeps track of them once there. Additionally, this chapter discusses information flow, introducing Filipino resources for giving prominence to one part of a clause or another. This discussion is then extended to the structure of phases of discourse consisting of several clauses in these texts. A focus on the resources of textual meaning provides a tool for examining which meanings are more prominent in discourse and what purpose these meanings serve in addressing one kind of audience while potentially marginalising others. At the same time, it is these same resources that can be reworked to craft alternative messages.

摘要
