The construction industry practices are criticised due to the high amount of waste generation and consumption of natural resources in Australia. Thus, it is necessary to transition from traditional linear to circular economy (CE)-based construction practices to overcome these challenges. This chapter aims to identify drivers for implementing CE-based waste management (WM) practices in Australian construction projects to mitigate the negative impacts of construction and demolition (C&D) waste generation. A qualitative research approach was used by conducting twenty preliminary interviews (Stage 1) and four case studies of commercial projects (Stage 2). The data was analysed using the content analysis method using NVivo software. The findings indicate that regulatory compliance, economic benefits, environmental sustainability, social responsibility, reputational benefits, stakeholder proactivity, time, cost and quality considerations are vital for implementing CE in managing C&D waste. Regulatory compliance requires collaboration among government, non-government organisations and industry stakeholders. Economic drivers include cost savings and new revenue streams, fostering environmental sustainability and innovation. Social responsibility promotes local growth and ethical advantages, while reputational benefits enhance brand values and commitment to sustainability. Stakeholder proactivity, driven by mutual interests, benefits both the environment and the community. Similarly, time, cost and quality considerations encompass the importance of balancing quality, cost and efficiency in implementing CE-related strategies. This balance advocates for a significant change in current construction practices by considering the interplay of policy, economy and social responsibility. These findings will be useful for construction professionals and policymakers to accelerate the implementation of CE-based C&D WM practices in construction projects. The findings will also contribute to advancing knowledge in the field of facilitating the implementation of CE.
