Renewable energy is increasingly recognised worldwide as crucial for sustainable development. In Sri Lanka, a developing nation, considerable efforts are put on attaining sustainable objectives, primarily solar energy. This chapter delves into economic aspects of two prevalent solar Photovoltaic (PV) systems: on-grid and off-grid installations in Sri Lankan context. The chapter provides a conceptual map outlining the financial challenges and strategies specific to each system, as well as those shared by both, drawing from insights gathered through twenty-four semi-structured interviews with users of both on-grid and off-grid solar systems and input from company and government authority experts. High capital costs and inadequate financing emerge as common challenges, addressed through strategies such as financing schemes, tax concessions and hybrid PV solar systems. Notably, the study underscores the pressing need for policy interventions and in-depth investigations to foster the profitability of solar PV systems, not only within Sri Lanka but also as part of the broader global shift towards renewable energy. By illuminating the economic complexities of solar energy deployment, this research significantly contributes to the global dialogue on renewable energy and provides a groundwork for future research endeavours and policy initiatives worldwide.
