Do Technology Readiness and Demographics Influence the Willingness to Crowdfund Commercial and Philanthropic Projects?
摘要
Crowdfunding campaigns are increasingly popular for raising funds for commercial and philanthropic projects, yet the number of funders and success rates continue to decline. Crowdfunding's dependence on internet capabilities and social networks makes technology readiness essential to understanding funders’ behaviors. Gender and age also play key roles in shaping digital and financial behaviors, influencing funders’ engagement and decisions. This study explores how technology-related traits (innovativeness and optimism), gender, and age impact the willingness to crowdfund commercial and philanthropic projects. It also highlights differences in motivations between these two project types to better understand their specific dynamics. Two online surveys were conducted (Study 1—commercial, n = 115; Study 2—philanthropic, n = 84). Results show that innovativeness and being a woman positively influence crowdfunding behavior for both project types. However, optimism toward technology influences only philanthropic campaigns, while age negatively impacts intentions in commercial projects. These findings offer actionable strategies for fundraisers to tailor campaigns based on funder profiles and project types, enhancing the likelihood of campaign success.
