Low-Carbon Communities: Learning from Traditional Pedestrian-Friendly Neighbourhoods in Iran to Contribute to the Net-Zero Global Goal

Low-Carbon Communities (LCCs) play a crucial role in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, improving sustainability, and enhancing urban livability. They also promote pedestrian-oriented living, reduce car dependence, and support a low-carbon lifestyle for residents. Iranian traditional neighborhoods are a prime example of LCCs due to their historical adaptation to the local climate and sustainable livelihood practices. This chapter aims to explore the architectural and urbanism principles practiced in the traditional neighborhoods of Iranian cities, thus learning some lessons for planning contemporary LCCs for domestic and abroad cities. At the same time, as the world works towards achieving a net zero carbon emissions target, it is important to learn from historical neighborhood architecture and design principles that have contributed to sustainable climate-friendly living throughout centuries. To achieve this, a qualitative archival method was employed, utilizing various publications to review the low-carbon characteristics of Iranian neighborhoods. The results revealed that traditional neighborhoods in old Iranian cities, Yazd, Shiraz, and Hamedan, exhibit critical principles that create car-free and pedestrian-friendly environments, including compact and mixed-use development, accessibility of daily services for all social classes, a human-scale physical structure, using vernacular material, integration of wind and solar energy Designing green buildings and provision of climatic comfort for inhabitants within the neighborhood and houses. By introducing the low-carbon urban design principles of traditional neighborhoods, this study provides insights for developing LCCs that can contribute to the global net-zero goal.
