Lignocellulosic Enzymes from Termite Gut for the Degradation of Plant Biomass

Lignocellulose biomass generated from various sources like forest waste, agricultural waste, and energy crops’ waste serves as a potent resource for biorefinery purposes. The recalcitrant structure of lignocellulose first needed to degrade to use the simple sugar molecules for biofuel generation and various value-added products. Lignocellulosic enzymes from various sources of fungus have been used to pretreat the plant biomass. Still, researchers are exploring promising sources of these enzymes that can efficiently degrade the complex lignocellulose biomass. Termites are social insects that thrive in woods and are of great ecological importance as they enhance the texture and fertility of the land where they live. The breakdown of woody substances by termite guts helps them to acquire nutrients for their survival. Thus, the gut symbionts residing in termite guts have received research importance as they are potent sources of lignocellulosic enzymes. In our study, we explored various enzymes and their 3-D structure from termite gut from different geographical locations, which may be used for basic research and further used in industrial applications.
