Geobiomineralization at the Interface of Plant–Microbe Interaction and the Role of Mycorrhizal Fungi

Biomineralization is a process in which living organisms catalyze the formation of minerals, this has drawn interest for its possible uses in environment remediation. In order to promote biomineralization, microbes use a variety of strategies, such as sorption and sequestration, mineral precursor synthesis, metabolism and transformation, and cooperative relationships among microbial communities. Mycorrhizal fungi enhance nutrient uptake, alter the soil’s biogeochemical composition, and establish symbiotic relationships with plants. These fungi increase plant roots’ surface area for nutrient uptake through their vast hyphal networks, speeding up the minerals’ weathering and dissolution. Mycorrhizal fungi produce organic acids and enzymes that aid in the transformation of minerals liberating vital minerals substrates and affecting soil fertility. Mycorrhizal fungi also help in the immobilization and detoxification of contaminated soil hence it becomes crucial to understand the process underlying plants, microbes, and minerals to fully investigate the potential of biomineralization as a sustainable strategy for environmental management; more investigation into this area is necessary.
