Advanced Materials in Orthopedics
摘要
Advanced materials are revolutionizing biomedical applications by enhancing the performance of implants, drug delivery systems, tissue engineering, and diagnostic tools. These materials, including 3D-printed implants, nanomaterials, and biomimetic materials, provide tailored properties that surpass traditional options. 3D-printed implants offer customization for orthopedic devices, allowing for precise designs that improve fit and functionality, thus reducing the need for intraoperative adjustments. Additive manufacturing techniques like FDM, SLA, SLS, and EBM enable the production of complex, patient-specific implants that enhance surgical outcomes. Nanomaterials, with their unique nanoscale properties, are pivotal in advancing orthopedic implants. Their high surface area and biocompatibility facilitate enhanced osseointegration, infection control, and targeted drug delivery. Applications range from bone regeneration and mechanical reinforcement of bone cement to scaffolds for tissue engineering. However, challenges such as biocompatibility, stability, and high production costs limit their broader clinical adoption. Biomimetic materials, inspired by natural biological systems, replicate the structure and properties of human tissues, enhancing compatibility and integration with the body. These materials, such as hydroxyapatite, bioactive glass, collagen, and silk fibroin, play critical roles in bone regeneration, tendon and ligament repair, and cartilage regeneration. Despite their potential, biomimetic materials face challenges related to mechanical strength, degradation rates, and complex manufacturing processes. Overall, the continuous development of advanced materials can transform medical treatments and technologies, leading to innovative, sustainable, and highly functional solutions in orthopedic and broader biomedical applications. However, ongoing research is essential to address existing limitations and enhance their clinical viability.
