Bioprospecting is the exploration of natural sources for small molecules , macromolecules , and genetic information that could be developed into commercially profitable products. It is an important process for discovering new bioactive compounds that can lead to significant advancements in medicine, agriculture, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries while promoting biodiversity conservation and sustainable development. Marine fungi are largely unexplored reservoirs of bioactive compounds with significant potential for various industrial applications. Marine fungi are located in diverse ecological niches, such as deep sea, coral reefs, and mangroves, and exhibit remarkable adaptations to salinity and pressure. It also explores the diversity of bioactive compounds isolated from marine fungi, including antibiotics, antifungals, anticancer agents, and enzymes with industrial relevance. Various methods of bioprospecting, such as sampling and cultivation techniques, are studied. Despite various applications of bioprospecting marine fungi, it faces various challenges and obstacles. Collaboration between marine biologists, chemists, and pharmacologists is essential to explore the biosynthetic capabilities of marine fungi fully. Exploring unexplored marine habitats and discovering novel marine fungal species hold great potential for innovative discoveries.
