The first thing that is necessary for 3DCG production is to appropriately represent the shape of the object one wants to depict on a computer. If we exclude things like clouds or fur that do not have a clear outline, the shape of an object can be described by its surface. Therefore, representing the shape of an object as a surface and further editing and processing it is extremely important in 3DCG production. The theoretical background related to surface shape processing includes various fields of mathematics such as differential geometry, and research has been continuously conducted from the dawn of computer graphics. In this chapter, after introducing basic concepts and data structures for representing surfaces, we will discuss several representative tasks and their basic solutions.

摘要
