Understanding and Readiness of the Building Construction Industry in Designing for Circularity: A Comparison with Manufacturing Industries

Circular economy (CE) principles mainly originated within manufacturing industries. However, buildings are complex dynamic systems that do not align well with the logic of manufacturing although a building is an amalgamation of manufactured components. Fragmented teams lead to the segregated ‘silo’ approach of the building construction industry, further hindering the implementation of circular design principles. Therefore, the direct translation of generic circular design principles to the building construction industry is curbed by these prevailing complexities. Hence, to drive circular designing in the building construction industry, the genesis is in investigating the current understanding and readiness of the building construction industry concerning Design for Circularity (DfC) and in proposing strategies and action plans to address any shortfalls therein. Given the maturity of manufacturing industries in applying circular design principles, this paper envisages drawing on insights and lessons learned from manufacturing industries that are relevant and beneficially adaptable to the building construction industry. Therefore, having conducted a preliminary literature review, this paper proposes a basic roadmap for the building construction industry to enhance the understanding and readiness of DfC. To develop the roadmap, the study conducted a SWOT Analysis based on a comprehensive literature review followed by preliminary semi-structured interviews of relevant experts in both the building construction and manufacturing industries. The findings lead to envisioning goals, and then discerning ways forward for the building construction industry to design for circularity, given its status quo, and actions needed to achieve the envisioned goals.
